Alzheimer’s Australia Vic commends the contribution of the people living with dementia, their families and carers who generously shared their experiences in a commitment to help others, for the ABC’s Four Corners program on Monday 10 July.

Leanne Wenig, Acting CEO Alzheimer’s Australia Vic, said all the people involved in the episode of Four Corners have demonstrated extraordinary generosity and bravery in sharing, with Australians, their experiences of what it is like for them living with dementia.

Alzheimer’s Australia Vic volunteer Ray Morgan OAM has been recognised with an Order of Australia Medal in the Queen’s Birthday 2017 Honours List.

The Queen’s Birthday 2017 Honours List recognises a diverse range of contributions and service across all fields, including professional endeavours, community work, Australia’s Defence Force and Emergency Services.

Alzheimer’s Australia Vic today stated that people living with dementia should not be excluded from having the right to choose a dignified death if Voluntary Assisted Dying is to be legislated in Victoria.

Leanne Wenig, Acting CEO Alzheimer’s Australia Vic said if this legislation is passed, excluding people living with dementia from being able to lawfully seek physician-assisted death will deny them the right to make their own choices.

The number of people with dementia in Australia has soared to more than 400,000 - and more than 104,000 in Victoria - with an estimated cost to the community of more than $14 billion this year alone, a new report has found. The research predicts this number will climb by another $4 billion in just eight years as the number of people living with the condition continues to rise dramatically.

Alzheimer’s Australia Vic’s ground-breaking, mobile, virtual reality workshop, Enabling EDIE, will be undertaken at Bupa Mildura, with their team among the first in Australia to use the unique dementia learning application.

Enabling EDIE (Educational Dementia Immersive Experience, pronounced Eddie) uses virtual reality technology, including Samsung Gear VR headsets, to create a 360-degree immersive scenario that enables participants to experience first-hand the challenges faced by people living with dementia.

Collingwood Football Club’s round one, women’s league, draft pick, Nicola Stevens is joining Memory Walk & Jog in Portsea this weekend in honour of her Mum, Ann who is 59 and living with younger onset dementia.

Ms Stevens, the new Alzheimer’s Australia Vic Ambassador, said, "I’m doing this for my Mum and for every person living with dementia who deserves to live their life with dignity and respect.

"I am passionate about sharing my personal experience to help others to realise they are not alone.
