Dementia Education: Health Services

Dementia Learning Guide 2017

Cognitive impairment (dementia and delirium) is common among older people admitted to hospital. These patients are at greater risk of preventable complications and adverse outcomes, including falls, pressure injuries, functional decline and mortality. More than ever, the importance of greater staff education and strong leadership in improving health outcomes for people living with dementia has become a major priority for many health services.

The Living Longer Living Better reforms provide support for this choice and emphasise that the care and support for people with dementia is now considered core business rather than a special needs area for all providers.Consequently there is an increased need for community care organisations to ensure that they are responsive to the needs of consumers living with dementia. Alzheimer's Australia Vic is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) offering accredited programs and a broad range of dementia specific workshops and seminars to community care service providers and community support services.
